MEMBERSHIP FAQs
All information about Paddle Scotland’s membership options can be found
here.
What type of membership do I need?
Recreational membership is recommended for anyone who paddles in Scotland whether as an individual or with a club but does not coach or lead.
If you wish to hold a paddlesport qualification or progress on the Coaching and Leadership pathway, you must be a Full member.
Anyone under the age of 18 must register as a Junior member.
If you do not currently paddle but wish to be kept up to date, read our magazine and support our work, you may sign up as a Supporter.
Digital membership is a free membership option for anyone wishing to receive monthly updates through our regular newsletter. This might be suitable for someone considering Recreational or Full membership who is not currently active on the water. Please note there is no liability coverage or access to discounts for those registered as Digital members.
Do I really need public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance (also called "third party insurance") provides important protection if you were to cause injury to another paddler or damage to property, including other boats, buildings, docks, signage, etc. This could occur if you were to lose control of your boat. If you do not have public liability insurance and you are involved in an accident while paddling, you could be held liable for any injury or damage you cause.
How do I convert membership from another national association to Paddle Scotland membership?
If you have recently moved to Scotland and hold a membership with another national association, you should move your membership to Paddle Scotland at your next membership renewal date. Create an account and purchase membership through sca.justgo.com. If you hold any qualifications and credentials please get in touch with us and provide your details including your other association membership number. Paddle Scotland will then be able to request a copy of your record and transfer this over to your Paddle Scotland membership record.
How do I change or upgrade my membership type before my membership is due for renewal?
To upgrade your membership from Recreational to Full during your membership year, please get in touch. A discount code will be issued to take into account the remaining percentage of the membership year and allow you to purchase Full membership through the JustGo system. This new membership will then run until your membership renewal date.
Does my membership include a waterways license?
Paddle Scotland membership does not include a waterways license as this is not needed to paddle in Scotland. The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 ensures everyone has statutory access rights to most of Scotland’s outdoors if these rights are exercised responsibly, with respect for people’s privacy, safety and livelihoods, and for Scotland’s environment. Equally, land managers have to manage their land and water responsibly in relation to access rights.
What if I wish to Paddle in England - do I need a waterways license?
While purchasing a Paddle Scotland membership will cover you in terms of insurance to paddle in England, our membership does not include the waterways licence. To find more information on and to purchase the waterways licence, please visit the Canal & River Trust website.
I am already a Paddle Scotland member - how do I renew my membership?
You can manually renew your membership online by logging into your account at sca.justgo.com. Once in your account, click on the ‘Membership’ page at the top of the screen; this will take you to a new page which will show the different categories of membership: Member, Club Member or Digital Subscriber.
Click the ‘Member’ tile to see the different types of Paddle Scotland membership available. Click the tile of the membership you would like and then complete the form below. Click ‘Finish’ to proceed to the cart where you will have the option to pay by card or set up a direct debit.
Set up your membership to auto-renew and you will receive a 10% discount on your membership at each renewal. Auto-renewal can be managed under the ‘Finance’ tile - see more below.
How do I edit my direct debit?
Members can manage their auto-renewal and direct debit information in JustGo by logging into their Paddle Scotland account via sca.justgo.com.
Once in their account, within the 'Menu' (top left-hand corner of the screen) open the ‘Finance’ tile. Click ‘View Plans’ to see the items and payment details on a recurring payment plan.
In the Finance tile members can update card details, edit direct debits and check on their auto-renewal plans.
I do not live in Scotland - can I still join?
If you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, you must join the national association of your country of residence. This membership will still provide insurance for paddling in Scotland, allow you to access many Paddle Scotland benefits and to enter events.
If you live abroad, you are welcome to become a member of Paddle Scotland. This will give you peace of mind to know you are insured for your paddling in Scotland. Please note if you reside outside of Scotland you will receive a digital version of our quarterly magazine Scottish Paddler.
How do I access eLearnings from the British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB)?
As a Paddle Scotland member, you are entitled to a range of discounted or free BCAB eLearnings from the BCAB Shop. In order to access this you must create an account and link your Paddle Scotland membership. If you are experiencing issues on the BCAB site please use the Paddlebot icon on the corner of the screen to seek help or contact their support email elearning@britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk.
I wish to get qualified as a paddlesport, Instructor, Coach or Leader. What membership must I hold?
In order to hold any paddlesport qualification you must be registered as a Full (not Recreational) or Junior Paddle Scotland member.
If you only wish to take part in a Safety or Skill Development course, you may hold Recreational membership as well as Full or Junior membership.
You may also undertake Safety or Skill Development courses without a Paddle Scotland membership, however you will have to sign up for day membership to cover you for the duration of your course.
What is Day membership?
Day Membership is a requirement for non-members looking to take part in Paddle Scotland events and can be purchased through JustGo when signing up for an event. The cost of day membership can be redeemed against individual membership for up to 12 months - please contact us for a discount code.
What is a digital membership card?
Digital membership cards are issued to all individual members and can be downloaded directly to your Apple or Google wallet or stored on your phone for handy access.
Members can still be sent a Print at Home membership card on request - see below.
What if I don’t use Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?
When you join or renew your membership you will automatically receive a confirmation email containing the details of your membership, including Membership Number, Membership Start and End date and Membership type. This will suffice as proof of membership even if you choose not to download the digital wallet app.
Can I still get a physical membership card?
On request we can supply a Print at Home membership card. To request this, please get in touch.
How do I access the family discount on membership?
Family discounts will apply automatically to accounts that are linked as a 'Family' on JustGo. It is important to note that each member of a 'Family' will retain their own account with a unique log in. Family members must be registered to the same address.
Create your 'Family' in JustGo by first setting up or logging into your account. On the left hand side of the 'My Profile' page under your profile tile you will see ‘Create Family'. Click 'Add Family Member' and then you can either link existing members or new members.
To link an existing member you will need to know two of the following pieces of information: their membership number, the email address they have used to create their account, or their date of birth. A verification email is then sent for the family member to confirm. Linking a new member will create an account for them in JustGo and will also send a verification email.
Once a Family is set up, an automatic discount will be applied upon purchasing membership that is relevant to the number of family members, with each member entitled to 10% off their annual membership.
